ADHD and Autism Medication Considerations for Therapists

Designed for therapists and other non-medical mental health providers, this training explores the usage of psychiatric medication as one component of a model of care that respects neurodivergent autonomy and identity. Participants will learn basics on how ADHD medications work, address common misconceptions about stimulants, other psychotropic medications and examine existing evidence on dietary changes and supplements for mental health.
Participants will explore considerations for autistic individuals, including managing co-occurring challenges and understanding unique medication responses.
This course offers concrete guidance for therapists on discussing medication with clients while remaining within scope of practice.

- Examine the role of psychiatry in relationship to colonialism and implications for neurodivergent care
- Classify ADHD Medications and identify their mechanisms of action
- Summarize common misconceptions about ADHD Medications
- Discriminate between managing co-existing conditions and medicating autistic traits
- Discuss relevant clinical experience on autistic individuals’ unique medication reactions
- Discuss medications with clients within the therapeutic relationship and within scope of practice
